1. MOAACC again a Col. Marvin J. Harris Communications “Five Star” Award Recipient!
Each year, MOAA national recognizes chapters and councils doing an outstanding job communicating with their members by awarding the Col. Marvin J. Harris Communications Award. The award is given to the chapters and councils with the best newsletters and websites from among MOAA’s 400+ affiliates. Our chapter has received this award every year since it has been given, and once again for 2021 our chapter received the “5 Star” or highest rating. We continue to “pole vaulted over the hurdle” of requirements for this award with our state-of-the-art website, a first class printed and electronic monthly News Magazine—THE INTERCOM, and other media such as this e-Newsletter and a Facebook page! Congratulations to our Public Relations and Marketing (PR&M) Committee, with Donn Weaver – Committee Chair, Mike Schroeder – Webmaster, Jeanne Weaver – last year’s Editor of The Intercom, Steve Bond – Editor of our Five Things e-Newsletter, and Tim Pishdad – Facebook administrator for once again clearing the bar to receive this distinction and keeping our members informed and engaged. The award will be presented by Lt Gen Atkins (USAF, Ret), MOAA CEO & President at the Florida Council Convention in West Palm Beach on June 11th. Well done!
2. MOAA Foundation Grant to help Local Veterans-in-need
More recognition of our good work from MOAA National—The Cape Canaveral Chapter was one of only 33 Chapters from among MOAA’s 400+ affiliates awarded a MOAA Foundation Outreach Grant to support veterans-in-need in local communities again this year. We received $3,000 from the MOAA Foundation to assist area veterans and their family members in critical need of assistance with housing, subsistence, health, financial or other emergency relief. Using this grant, the chapter along with our Good Deeds Foundation, will be working with the National Veterans Homeless Support (NVHS) to identify and verify veterans or families of veterans-in-need. Once area veterans are validated, we will deliver items or make assistance payments. We thank the MOAA Foundation for this grant to help us take care of our brother and sister veterans and their families. Community Service is one of the primary reasons why we exist as an organization. If you know of a veteran-in-need, have them contact NVHS or the Veterans Administration. For more about MOAA Foundation Grants, go here on the MOAA website.
3. Take Action: Toxic Waste Exposure
Representatives from several veterans organizations, including MOAA, passionately called on the Senate to pass the Honoring our PACT Act during a press conference on April 19th at the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) national headquarters in Kansas City, Mo. The proposed legislation expands health care benefits for veterans exposed to toxic materials or environments such as burn pits and Agent Orange from the Vietnam War. MOAA’s efforts include the online advocacy campaign and the May issue of Military Officer magazine shares stories of those affected by toxic exposure and includes postcards to mail to our legislators. We encourage you to mail in those postcards, and go here on the MOAA website and TAKE ACTION!
4. Academy Appointment & ROTC Scholarship Luncheon
Don’t miss our May luncheon! The luncheon is on Tuesday, May 17th in Colony Hall at the Indian River Colony Club. Reservations are required by this Wednesday, May 11th. The May luncheon recognizes students from across the Brevard County receiving Service Academy Appointments or ROTC Scholarships. You can find luncheon choices and reservation information here on our website or by clicking on the “Upcoming Events” link below. AAFMAA, one of our new chapter corporate advertiser/sponsors has graciously offered to sponsor this luncheon for the students we are recognizing. This is another highlight of the year for MOAACC!
5. MOAACC Advertisers and Sponsors keep growing!
We welcome another new Chapter Advertiser/Sponsor–CIGNA! CIGNA provides a wide variety of medical plans, including a Medicare Advantage plan. Be looking for their ad in the June Intercom and on our website. We appreciate all our advertisers and sponsors. For a full listing of our advertisers go to https://moaacc.org/home/advertisers/. In the last Five Things, we welcomed the American Armed Forces Mutual Aid Association (AAFMAA) Wealth Management and Trust LLC (WM&T) as a new advertiser/sponsor. Others, such as Indian River Colony Club (IRCC) allow us to use their outstanding facilities, advertise in The Intercom, sponsor our Five Things e-Newsletter, and this year is sponsoring the Color Guard lunches at our Monthly Luncheons! Please review the list of all our advertisers to see who within our area are actively supporting the chapter. While we cannot endorse businesses, we do encourage our members to consider and compare the services they provide. Be sure to thank all our sponsors/advertisers for supporting the chapter! If you know of a company that would be interested in becoming a MOAACC Sponsor/Advertiser let us know at firstname.lastname@example.org.
